Frank Schilling of Name Administration Inc push forward for change across 100,000’s of targeted keyword domains
Article by: http://www.wannadevelop.com
Frank Schilling has been pushing forward for change… Well, within his own portfolio at least. It consists of 100,000’s of domains as if you didn’t already know and is one of the best collections of domains if not the best… It’s right up there with Kevin Ham’s Reinvent Technologies domain portfolio and BuyDomains / NameMedia collection of domains! As I was doing some research I came across a couple of domains that looked a bit strange… Strange in the sense that I have never seen a similar design or setup such as this one in particular. Some examples of the domains I am talking about:
edibleflowers.com
coloringbooks.com
boatsforsale.com
skateshoes.com
carrims.com
promhair.com
fastgrowingtrees.com
blackhairstyles.com
Yea.. So you get the idea. Not too many of Franky’s domains are setup this way though… But I just looked at a random sampling of a few hundred domains total that one day in order to get a better understanding of what is going on. The most unique thing about this design and setup is that it looks similar to a search engine default page and each and every site has a custom and unique description underneath the domain name and eight textlinks too that lead to a graphic sponsored results page, although the original page has sponsored results as well to follow in the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth positions… Now if you visit and search on any of those pages such as coloringbooks.com at the top search box you will see that the eight text links will change… They are the traditional “related links” or “related categories” auto suggested by Yahoo according to the keyword being searched for.
So what is the big deal you ask? What is so special about this domains?? Well, the thing is… There are 5 total sponsored results which you can click on once you arrive at the domain. There aren’t any other options for user interaction with the site. Franky’s other traditional and more widely used domain lander designs and setup across his portfolio always lists 5 sponsored results usually as well as “related links” on the right side and “categories” on the bottom… This type of setup makes the domains appeal as some sort of directory to a user…. And that it is — a directory of sponsored advertisements powered by Yahoo.
See for yourself… The first row of domains are 1-click landers and second one is 2-click landers. All of them have a nice and relevant graphic header which Franky setup a little over a year ago or so if I recall correctly.

Why is Franky using those plain and simple designs that look like they are straight from the 90’s… Why is he experimenting with it right now? Well, domain parking companies employ very aggressive and “in your face” type of display tactics in order to make the most money possible and get the best click through rate. If a visitor doesn’t click on anything and simply leaves the domain doesn’t earn anything during that visit and changes slim to none that he will be returning anytime soon. Some domain parking companies such as Sedo or NameDrive show you 10 sponsored results by default… While some of the others show you 5 and if you want more you need to click on “next” or “more” to continue browsing through “sponsored results” but why exactly do they do this? Simply put… To force action upon you — to get you to click on one of the five search results. The most popular and some that are considered to be the best use this tactics… Not all of them used to though up until recently. The list includes Hitfarm, Trafficz, and Fabulous. Parking companies that are powered by both Google and Yahoo — which obviously have approved this. The top 5 results are almost always the highest paid ones.. Sure Google and Yahoo employ certain “relevancy” and “popularity” alogarithms but almost always and probably 9 times out of 10 the top paid advertisements are what make it to the top. Franky is trying to get better conversion rates, meaning more click throughs on the top 5 sponsored results by kind of pressuring the visitors into taking action… The attention span is only a few seconds… There isn’t much time. Plain and simple. He isn’t doing anything out of the lines or anything that hasn’t been done already but in this case it is a process of re-organization and optimization. Google and Yahoo is fine with it and no rules are broken and as long as the traffic and advertisements are targeted then all is well.
Now that was one “new” thing I noticed… I would call it going back to the basics — simple designs and setup have proved to be very effective… In one word: DomainSponsor! The most “ugly” looking domain landing pages by far… That have performed the best for them… For many years now and still counting! Yet they are one of the best parking companies around and continue to make tons of money for everyone. So anyways, this wasn’t the only thing that I discovered about Franky’s domains. It turns out that he is experimenting with another type of setup which includes relevant (what may be custom?) written text and images incorporated into the domains.

So you are probably thinking… Ok, I see a trend here… He is mostly focused on Finance and such with this new setup? But is he really?? Is he just experimenting with Finance… Wait a minute… No.. He has really spread out his resources all over the place to even cover some very odd and unique topics… That tells you that he is serious about this type of setup and quiet committed to it.

Franky is still sticking to his guns and knows what performs best and hasn’t yet rolled this out across all of the 1000’s of premium domains he owns such as antarctica.com and propertylistings.com or foreigncurrency.com — But slowly and surely I see more and more of this domains popping up with a fresh and new look to them and better monetization and use of traffic. This is a big step in the right direction I believe. Experimenting with multiple setups is important and can be done simultaneously with parked domains especially…That is a luxury domain owners always had and always will have… Optimization is the key to success and you get things down right to perfection with a little bit of hard work! Franky is smart and knows what he needs to do in order to make more money from the traffic his domains generate. This “changes” and improvements may be an indication of even more bigger and better things to come from his company.
But wait….. We’re not done yet. Franky already is involved with full scale “development” and I was able to find some of the projects… Which include mobile.net and webhealth.com — Both sites are nothing really too fancy or unique but do serve a purpose and I applaud Franky for thinking about the bigger picture. Development is the way of building a better future for himself and a better web. Development is a way of tapping into many opportunities and to grow your business exponentially online. More and more domain investors are developing their domains into functioning websites with relevant information, products and services and seeing firsthand that it is what it’s all about at the end of the day… Especially for domains that don’t get much type in traffic.
Most of today’s wealthiest domain holding companies and professional investors who have snapped up the best domains burst onto the “domain” scene after the dot com bust and the years to follow in 2001, 2002… Hard times present many opportunities. Right now we are going through a recession and times are hard as domain traffic revenues are shrinking and growth and confidence is slowing quiet a bit… That doesn’t mean that all hope is lost. Fortunately for domains not much has changed…. There are many opportunities to be had and Franky is not sitting on his ass waiting for something to happen — he is pushing forward full speed trying to make them happen and I like the way he is going about doing so.
Oh how it’s good to be Frank Schilling… 1000’s of premium domains worth hundreds of thousands of dollars…. So many opportunities to be had and the future looks brighter than ever with each day passing. Franky also has another great category killer domain with a unique setup worth mentioning which would probably make some domainers jealous but it’s the one and only domain I know of which is setup this way legally… It is movierentals.com — Pretty cool huh?! It’s good to be Frank Schilling… I look forward to seeing more innovative ideas and projects from Franky. The timing is just right and 2009 is going to be a big year for professional domain investors, full of hopefully good changes, taking bold and aggressive actions towards visions and such dreamed up 5, 10 and 15 years ago… Which in internet years is forver! Good luck to all of us.
Maybe some of you were already aware of this changes and/or this is old news to you but I did not see anything about it and thought it would be useful to put in writing and showcase some of the positives to take away from this. Not bad for the first “observation” piece here… Right? It got kinda long though! I’ll try to keep all future observations reported here short and to the point but some may just require a cup of coffee from time to time
